The Old World usually refers to Europe, a small continent containing
30
countries. The people speak many different languages, but are very active
in trading with each other. Recently, a number of countries formed the
European Community to make trade easier. Some countries have plenty of
natural resources to sell (coal, iron, oil, or natural gas, for example).
Others have lots of factories, and sell manufactured goods such as clothing
or cars. Over the centuries, as farms and cities developed, many wild
animals disappeared. Some, however, like the ancient European bison in
Poland, still survive in protected areas or remote places.
